Open Up And See Opportunity

I absolutely love the song in the latest version of the movie, Annie that’s sung by the young actress, Quvenzhané Wallis, and especially the scene when she belts out the lyrics to the song, “My Big Opportunity” in front of a group of adults. No matter what you think of the the new version this classic film, to me this scene is such a beautiful example of capturing and embracing the moment at hand, where opportunity shows up and steps in and reveals itself to us.

The funny thing is, opportunities come at us literally all of the time, in many different forms. We just don’t always notice them. And the idea that an opportunity or invitation is BIG or small is just made up, in our thinking in the moment, as we make it up and perceive it as big or small, important. or a waste of time.

This reflection brought me to this question:

How do we open ourselves up to see opportunity more often, and open the invitation that life gives us all day long?

The answer that came to me is to simply be present to receive, while at the same time not seeking whatever we think it should look like, to the point of totally missing it.

This is the part where we think we know what it should look like and decide that we must need to take the next five steps (insert any number) in order to bring it to our experience and get somewhere we think we should be by now.

When the Truth is this:

Looking for miracles and next steps isn’t our job.

Taking them is.

Then we can go left or right.

We get to be alive. It’s a gift to open up, over and over and over again.

Love.

Song lyrics My Big Opportunity:

Under the glow of the very bright lights
I turn my face towards the warm night sky
And I am not afraid of a thousand eyes
When they're above five hundred smiles

Oh I used to think (she used to think)
What wouldn't I give (what wouldn't she give)
For a moment like this? (For a moment like this?)
This moment this gift

Oh, now look at me and this opportunity
Is standing right in front of me
But one thing I know it's only part luck and so
I'm putting on my best show
Under the spotlight I'm starting my life
Big dreams becoming real tonight
So look at me and this opportunity
You're witnessing my moment, you see?

Now I find myself here, and it's time
Yes this is real, and it's a gold-mine
I'm not afraid to fly
When it's above five hundred smiles
Oh I used to think (she used to think)
What wouldn't I give (what wouldn't she give)
For a moment like this?
This moment, this gift (for a moment like this?)

Oh, now look at me and this opportunity
Is standing right in front of me
One thing I know it's only part luck and so
I'm putting on my best show
Under the spotlight I'm starting my life

Big dreams becoming real tonight
So, look at me and this opportunity
You're witnessing my moment, you see?
My big opportunity
I won't waste it, I guarantee
