The Coast is Clear

I was driving my daughter to school this morning when the familiar phrase “the coast is clear” came up in our conversation and filled the car with laughter.

Personally, I’ve always loved the phrase and maybe it’s due to my deep love for the ocean and the California coast.

But lately I’ve been paying very close attention to the meaning behind the everyday words we use and this one in particular stuck out to me this morning when talking with Adriana.

I did some research and the phrase first appeared in print in 1531 where it was described as a vessel which had safely cleared the coast.  Years later it was used by Shakespeare in 'Henry VI' as a reference to visibility.

In my experience, it’s typically used to describe a feeling of permission as in the situation at hand is ‘safe to proceed with’ or a feeling of ‘it’s okay to move forward.’

The thing is it looks different to me now because unless we’re literally waiting for our ship to clear the coast,  it doesn’t make sense to think we know when it’s clear to cross or pass or say “yes” or “no” as long as we are waiting for outside circumstances, events or people to give us the go ahead.

So, how do you know when to take a leap or chance or to say ‘yes’ or ‘no’ to an opportunity or whatever question is right in front of you?

It may seem too simple however, I’m always being pointed back to the knowing that:

We simply know when we know.

In conversations with my clients it often comes up that sometimes we want our outside circumstances or someone else to give the go ahead or the halt.

Not us.  Someone or something else to pull the trigger on what we want.

It seems as though we think we can blame them or the situation if things don’t go the way we thought they should.
Knowing that there’s no way to ever really know how things will look or what result will occur, we can safely proceed in the direction of our dreams or whatever looks like

The next step.

Which from our eyes and the thinking we have in the moment can appear to us in the form of looking and feeling like

A wild adventure or
A simple step or
A big, scary leap or
A logical thing to do

Simply the only thing that makes sense to us in the moment.

In my experience, it’s the very next step that gives us the gorgeous unfolding of what wants to move through us now.

And when we ignore it and get all up in our thinking and Father Knows Best towards it, we miss out on all of the beauty and miracles created just for Us.  Right now.

Your ship is always clearing, again and again, as life moves through you taking you to the coast.

We are always Home.

A Playful Exercise To Move Forward (worksheet inside)

I just finished a truly magical weekend at The Irish Cottage Boutique Hotel in Galena, Illinois with my husband, Jeff, where we celebrated 20 years of marriage and his birthday.

Our time together and the beautiful space that is the Irish Cottage (this picture gives you a view of the library) can only be described as magical.

All of the synchronicities that revealed themselves to me the over weekend, moment to moment, can only be described as little miracles pointing me to overwhelming gratefulness in that...

I never would have thought in a million years that I would get to live the life I live now.

And there’s no way I could have planned or orchestrated it either. I do know that lately life has felt like being completely ‘in sync’ and in alignment with what my soul wants, and how I’m meant to serve others during this time.

I experienced the same resolute knowing last week when I held intensives for two of my clients. What looks very clear to me and part of what they saw is this:

All we ever have to do is be open and present to what's right in front of us - and - our very best in any given moment, (whatever that looks like) because sometimes that looks spectacular, almost as if it was pure magic. And other times it just looks like we’re fooling around and letting things fall as they do.

Either way, there's another key ingredient:

Being Open.

The amount of willingness we have to be OPEN for what wants to be created, changed, or transformed in any situation, project, relationship; in the moment is a large factor in what actually gets done and our whole experience.

Then all the beautiful, magical and surprising miracles show up in unexpected ways as OPPORTUNITIES we wouldn’t have even noticed before.

So....go take a chance and do your thing.

It’s the perfect moment.

And You get to be present to it.

Love and light,

A Playful Exercise:  10 Ways I See To Move Forward In The Direction Of My Dreams Now

Playing the game of life

This week's post is a bit different usual because it's really just a big, giant question.

Does it look like a game?

And if so, does the game look fun and easy or really difficult right now?

Maybe it doesn't look like a game to you at all, but rather a series of pre-planned events that you have to endure or just go along with until, well, it's over.

Sounds depressing, right?

With the recent unexpected deaths of both Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain, I've taken a step back to look at my own life and how I see it.

We all go through difficult times.  Knowing that my thoughts come and go and that I no longer need to label them as good or bad or even dwell in them has helped me come back to this thought over and over and over, and it's this:

Meaning: I don't have figure out what to do next.

It will happen on it's own, when it occurs to me.  And in those moments when I don't know what to do next, that's perfect too.

Because I will, know that is, soon enough.

All this means is that all I ever have to do is be present to the thought that comes through in the moment.

I recently watched the film 'A League of Their Own' again for our family movie night.  In the film you see how the women of the first ever women's baseball league overcame what they wanted to accomplish and took advantage of EVERY SINGLE MOMENT to move the bar in their favor. Sure, they did some not so feminist things back then to get us just a little closer as women to being "in the game" of life.

To have more choices.

To be who we are as individuals.  And together.  As one human race.

You could see the ideas and noticing take place throughout the movie, and how they were each ready at any second to take advantage of what they saw as opportunity in any moment, in the game happening on the field, or life.

For me, most of the time, I don't even see the thought or feeling come in until after I've noticed it, experienced some sort of level of awareness, and then at times - - lately more now than ever - - the INSIGHTS come in like floods. Bathing me in Truth and I know exactly what to do next.

So I guess what I'm up to now is just to LIVE FULLY and experience and enjoy this life.

How about you?

Starting Fresh

by Adriana (2018)

This weekend my daughter Adriana (9 years old) and I were talking about her room and how she wanted to change things up, specifically the decor.

She looked around at each piece of art on the wall and told me what she wanted to do next as she'd point out how that one needs to come down and will go in her scrapbook.  The next needs to come down and was meant to be recycled into something new.  Yet another would drop, but this would be for me to keep as she lovingly asked me to turn as she wrote my name on the bottom of the drawing with the caption, 'Love, Adriana'.

Soon enough we looked around her room and there wasn't a single painting or drawing left.

Bare walls.

I noticed how happy she was as she described what she wanted to create next for her room, and during this beautiful time on the brink of summer.

This whole experience reminded me of my own work, and ultimately everything we do in life.

In order for new, fresh ideas to come through, we must first let go of the old.  Releasing all of the time, blood, sweat, and tears we put into the act of creation because - - well, here' the really interesting thing, to me anyway...

I'm not saying that this beautiful picture (above) from Adriana doesn't exist.

What I am saying is that once she created it, and it moved through her, it wasn't hers anymore.

It took a life of its own.

I don't think for a second that she thought it would have inspired me to write this post, or share it with you...

And where will the "thought" of it go from there...?

Who knows.

It's Thought in the moment.

The idea of letting go of

Past projects
People we love
Ideas that inspired us
Art on the wall
A completed job, or task, or business

They're just done.  And what wants to come through now, that's BRAND NEW to us, can't exist in the world until we notice it and bring it life.

For today, I leave you with just a few questions to ponder:

  1. What are you READY to let go of now?
  2. What do you WANT to create next?

And whatever comes to you is just perfect for You in this moment.

And the very next step to take - - and it might be a HUGE LEAP or a tiny step, is ALL YOU EVER HAVE TO DO.

Enjoy this New Day x
